Prior to his death in 2019, Archbishop Harry Flynn remembered his friend, Father Stanley Rother, in a 2017 episode of the “Practicing Catholic” radio show. Father Rother was a priest from the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, who was martyred in rural Guatemala in 1981. Father Rother and Archbishop Flynn met while attending Mount St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Later, Father Rother’s bishop gave him permission to go to Guatemala to minister as a missionary, Archbishop Flynn said in the 2017 episode.

These 38 laywomen came for a commissioning to the Catholic Women Association (CWA) in Kenya. Bishop Henry Juma Odonya of the Diocese of Kitale in Kenya celebrated Mass and did the commissioning ceremony during this Sunday liturgy.

Each year the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Transfiguration on Aug. 6. The story of the transfiguration of Jesus appears in all three synoptic Gospels (cf. Mk 9:2-10; Mt 17:1-8; Lk 9:28-36). Almost all biblical scholars and spiritual writers agree that this intriguing story is important. They also agree that it almost defies interpretation.
