Communion and Mission

Holy Communion: Striving to be shaped and conformed to Christ

The worthy reception of holy Communion is the fullest way to fulfill the divine call to consciously and actively participate in the Mass. It’s certainly not the only way. We are still obligated to attend holy Mass even when we cannot receive holy Communion due to grave sin. But all other ways point to and are fulfilled in the worthy reception of holy Communion, when that Communion is received and celebrated in the context of the public celebration of the Mass.

Baptismal waters and the Holy Spirit’s fire

This is confirmation season. While some of our candidates receive this great sacrament in the fall or winter, the vast majority of young people within the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis receive the sacrament in the weeks and months right after Easter. It’s a very, very busy time for our bishops, as well as for the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis.

The wonders of God’s mercy

To celebrate Easter well, we must know of our need for redemption. This knowledge is not speculative or conceptual. It is something we are aware of like a toothache, a hangover, or the sadness of mourning a loved one who has died. It is a fact that is felt deep within and affects us, shading everything.

Joining voices

This past summer, I got a chance to hear a band in concert that shaped most of my teenage auricular life. I won’t scandalize Catholic Spirit readers by telling you the name of the group, only that its 1991 eponymous album thrilled this writer when he was younger in much the same way older generations were mesmerized by seeing John, Paul, George and Ringo on Ed Sullivan’s show tell the world that they wanted to hold her hand.

Moving beyond familiarity

One of the many fruits of the Second Vatican Council was a much stronger emphasis on the inspired word of God within the celebration of the sacraments of the Church.

The kingdom of God: union with God and one another

Communion is not just something we receive on Sundays.
