The victory of Easter present in our lives

There is an old movie theater in Maplewood that has long since closed its doors and silenced its sound systems while turning off its projectors. The silver screens inside it stand blank and lifeless as one expects they will remain until finally the building is demolished and the land sold to some developer to create a new building.

Symbols of the office of bishop

The four main symbols of the office of bishop are the crosier, miter, pectoral cross and ring.

The gift of self flows from love

In the writings of Pope St. John Paul II, we find a principle he often calls the Law of the Gift. He formulated it in various ways in different writings, but one might state it as follows: "God gave us our whole being so that we might give our whole being back to God."

Christ showed God’s incomprehensible love by dying on the cross

According to the Gospel of John, in his final moment on the cross, Jesus declared: "It is finished" (Jn 19:30). The words might also be translated: "It is fulfilled"; or "It is accomplished"; or "It is completed."

Jesus shows us what true friendship looks like

In his childhood, Karol Wojtyla, who would go on to become Pope St. John Paul II, became friends with Jerzy Kluger, with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

How unlocking the meaning of ‘I thirst’ empowers love

"I thirst" is the shortest phrase of the Lord's last words (Jn 19:28). Short though it may be, it contains unsearchable depths. The Lord was telling of his physical thirst on a first and properly literal level. The physical thirst of the Lord was no trivial detail in the Passion story but was foretold in the Old Testament. Psalm 22 tells us his "tongue cleaves to" his palate (Ps 22:16). Psalm 69 is even more explicit: "I am weary with crying out; my throat is parched" (Ps 69:4).

What is the Christlike way to suffer?

The Gospel of Matthew tells us: "(About) three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?' which means, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'" (Mt 27:46). This saying of the Lord raises the question of how the Lord inwardly related to the Father amid suffering. By implication, it raises the question of how you and I should relate to God amid our sufferings too. What is the Christlike way to suffer?

Refreshing the weary spirit

A few weeks ago, I was on my annual retreat. The location was a familiar retreat house in Old Tampa Bay, Florida. In this sacred space, the Lord has bestowed beautiful graces on me over the years of my priesthood, and this year was no different. Maybe it was my childhood memories of vacations off the coast of South Carolina, but I found the water beckoning me to deeper contemplation and refreshment.

The 3 dimensions of the ministry of a bishop

Holy orders is one of the seven sacraments. It, along with the sacrament of marriage, belongs to a special group of sacraments known as the sacraments of commitment. These two sacraments are “sacraments at the service of communion,” “directed toward the salvation of others,” and “serve to build up the people of God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 1534).

‘Behold your mother’ with love and confidence

When God gives us sanctifying grace in baptism, what he gives us is a share in his own divine life. The spirit of God is poured into our hearts (cf. Rom 5:5). The Spirit, in turn, forms our hearts into a likeness of the eternal Son (cf. 2 Cor 3:18).

Following the good thief’s simple steps of repentance

The heart of the Father is rich in mercy, and he is now calling every human being on the face of the earth to a change of heart. "Repent!" was the first word out of the Lord's mouth in his public preaching, "and believe in the Gospel" (Mt 4:17; Mk 1:15).

Stand firm against temptation

The tempter’s ways haven’t changed much since the beginning. When we boil it down, he does pretty much the same thing every time.
