The Catholic Spirit wins 12 national press awards

The Catholic Spirit won 12 Catholic Press Association newspaper awards at the annual Catholic Media Conference June 21 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Three first-place awards are among the honors captured by the newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

The list is as follows:

  • Photographer of the Year — Third place: Dave Hrbacek
  • Best Feature Writing – Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,000 or more — Second place: The Power of Praise by Dave Hrbacek
  • Best Headline — Honorable mention: The ‘Brew’ Evangelization
  • Explanation of Marriage — Third place: Humanae Vitae by Maria Wiering
  • Best Reporting on a Special Age-group – Young adults (18-40) — First place: Millennial finds freedom in the faith by Jonathan Liedl
  • Best Reporting on a Special Age-Group – Children and Teens Younger than 18 — Third place: From Myanmar to St. Jerome by Dave Hrbacek
  • Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues – Care for God’s Creation — Third place: Catholic Cemeteries to offer ‘natural burial’ by Maria Wiering
  • Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues – Solidarity — First place: Welcoming the stranger by Jessica Trygstad
  • Best Reporting on Vocations to Priesthood, Religious Life or Diaconate – Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,001 or More — Honorable mention: Ordination
  • Best Photo Story – News — Second place: Oh Happy Day
