This past weekend, we were blessed here in the archdiocese to ordain five men to the priesthood. Besides the beautiful Saturday morning Mass for priestly ordination, it was a weekend full of prayers, Holy Hours, receptions and first Masses of Thanksgiving. We thank God that he has been so generous to give us five new priests, five new shepherds, and five new witnesses to his love.
El fin de semana pasado tuvimos la bendición, aquí en la arquidiócesis, de ordenar a cinco hombres al sacerdocio. Además de la hermosa misa matutina del sábado para la ordenación sacerdotal, fue un fin de semana lleno de oraciones, Horas Santas, recepciones y las primeras misas de Acción de Gracias. Damos gracias a Dios por su generosidad al darnos cinco nuevos sacerdotes, cinco nuevos pastores y cinco nuevos testigos de su amor.

Who would have guessed we’d have a new pope at the time of this writing? These past weeks have been filled with transitions as the month of May sends us whirling into new life with renewed spirits.
¿Quién hubiera imaginado que tendríamos un nuevo papa al momento de escribir esto? Estas últimas semanas han estado llenas de transiciones, ya que el mes de mayo nos impulsa hacia una nueva vida con ánimos renovados.
Cultures often pass on their wisdom by means of proverbs. In the 18 years that I lived in Rome, I struggled to make sense of some of the more colorful Italian sayings. Given the strength of the Catholic Church in Italian life over the centuries, it shouldn’t be surprising that many of those sayings involved ecclesiastical references. For example, a Roman who wants to say that something happens very rarely, might indicate that it happens only “ogni morto del papa” (every time a pope dies). Whether that’s better than “once in a blue moon” I’ll leave to you.
Las culturas suelen transmitir su sabiduría mediante proverbios. Durante los 18 años que viví en Roma, me costó comprender algunos de los dichos italianos más pintorescos. Prior to the beginning of Lent, I celebrated the funeral of Jenny Wiederholt-Pine. Wiederholt-Pine was 44 years old, a wife and mother of three who was actively involved with her kids, a successful businesswoman, and was recently elected to the local school board.

I am approaching the two-year anniversary of my ordination as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. As I travel around, I am asked a lot of questions like: "What’s the most enjoyable thing about being a bishop? What has been the most difficult thing? What has been the most surprising thing?"
