People with a taste for Lebanese baked goods might want to visit St. Ann’s Club at St. Maron Maronite Catholic Church in Northeast Minneapolis Nov. 11-12.
The parish is holding a bake sale. The proceeds will benefit the club and the parish.
Lisa Gleason, a member of the parish’s pastoral council, recently joined “Practicing Catholic” radio show host Patrick Conley to discuss the bake sale for an upcoming episode.
The sale will feature “authentic, traditional Lebanese food” made in the church’s commercial kitchen by members of the Lebanese men and women’s clubs, “old and young alike,” Gleason said. “Even our beloved Chorbishop Sharbel Maroun dons an apron and is knee deep in helping us cook,” she said.
Items for sale will include sambousek, “a Lebanese spin on a Russian tea cake,” Gleason said, as well as a cookie with anise flavoring dipped in rose water syrup; baklava; mishtah, “a flat loaf-type bread;” traditional meat pie; spinach pie, which is “filled with spinach, onions and lemon;” and zaatar bread, “a traditional, authentic, Lebanese … flatbread with seasonings and seeds.”
The latter is “a big seller,” Gleason said. “People buy those by the dozens.”
Parishioners are asked to bring their own homemade baked goods as well, Gleason said. A “country store” with gently used “garage sale-type items” will also be available.
The sale brings together young and old, with people cooking, singing, praying and talking, Gleason said. “The Lebanese that are here from the old country and those of us born first, second generation here are learning together and learning the old ways and some of the new ways,” she said.
The deadline for reserving baked goods via online ordering is Oct. 30. To do so, visit stmaron.com. But people can stop by the day of the sale without reserving items.
