The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has posted on its website the deposition of Archbishop Robert Carlson of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Archbishop Carlson gave the deposition as part of a civil lawsuit in a case of alleged clergy sexual abuse.

“We offer his deposition — of which selected portions were redacted to protect victims — as part of our renewed commitment to transparency and disclosure,” the archdiocese states on its website.

Archbishop Carlson was a priest of Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis between 1970 and 1994, serving as chancellor from August 1979 until July 1987, and as auxiliary bishop from January 1984 through February 1994.

The deposition was conducted May 23 by attorneys for a plaintiff known as “John Doe 1.”

The plaintiff alleges that a former priest of the Diocese of Winona, Thomas Adamson, who had assignments in the archdiocese, sexually abused him in 1976 or 1977 when he was a minor.
