The Minnesota Catholic Conference (MCC) is urging Catholics to make phone calls to Gov. Tim Walz as the governor considers eliminating funding for nonpublic school students in his revised budget released March 21.
The MCC, which represents the public policy interests of Minnesota’s bishops, issued an action alert on the topic.
“Every student deserves access to the resources they need to succeed, no matter where they go to school,” the MCC stated. “This harmful proposal would defund essential services like textbooks, nursing, counseling, testing, and transportation, unfairly targeting families who rely on nonpublic education.”
MCC suggested placing a call to Walz’s office via this link to “respectfully urge him to drop this harmful proposal.” If the phone line is busy, MCC advised waiting on the line, calling back later in the day, or leaving a voicemail, if presented with that option.
MCC also suggested reaching out to state legislators to voice opposition to eliminating nonpublic pupil aid. MCC suggested visiting mncatholic.org/action_23393 to contact state legislators.
Those interested can also share MCC’s informational handout with family, friends and fellow parishioners.
More information about nonpublic pupil aid and transportation aid can be found in MCC’s recent “Inside the Capitol” column published in The Catholic Spirit.
