Focus on Faith

Take courage

Many years ago, I took a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Help of Christians at Holy Hill in Wisconsin. Many people come for the beauty of the church set on a hill and its surroundings, but many others come to pray for a miracle. I went with a friend who had a speech impediment.

Generosity of spirit

Nearly every Christmas season growing up, my family would watch Frank Capra's famous film “It's a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart.

Configured to Jesus, priests preach, teach and are instruments of healing grace

Jesus was a tremendous preacher and teacher. He taught large crowds, small groups and individuals. Sometimes he taught in synagogues. Sometimes he spoke plainly, other times in figures of speech taken from ordinary life, all to help his listeners encounter God and live according to God’s ways.

What Catholics need to know about designer babies and genetic editing

In 1997, the critically acclaimed science fiction film "Gattaca" depicted a genetically stratified dystopia in which the genetically engineered class ruled over those who had been born naturally. At the time, some bioethicists such as James Hughes scoffed at the film's depiction of "designer babies" as "fear-mongering." A little over 20 years later, its science fiction is quickly approaching this reality. If the 2022 documentary "Make People Better" is any indication, this kind of experimentation is already happening.

On maimed limbs and divided hearts

“On a scale of one to 10, how much do you want it?”

How do I know if it’s God speaking to me?

Q) I’ve been praying and trying to get closer to God. But sometimes I don’t know if what I’m thinking is God’s voice or my own thoughts. Is there any way that I can tell?

Who do you say that I am?

Who do you say that I am? How many correct answers are there to that question?

The priest configures himself to Jesus, the high priest

Jesus is the great high priest (Heb 4:14) as declared by God (Heb 5:10), “holy innocent, undefiled” (Heb 7:26). Jesus is great, superior to every other priest, whether Moses or Aaron or any other priest, because he is both divine and human, God and man. All other priests are only human, “beset by weakness” (Heb 5:2).

Stay with Christ in the Mass

“Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

What can I do for my kids who don’t practice the faith?

Q) I am a parent of three kids, all of whom I tried to raise in the Catholic faith. One of them seems to have very little interest, one is relatively hostile and one still goes to church. None of them live with us anymore, but I wish that I could do something to strengthen their faith. Is there anything that I can do?

Grieving the Holy Spirit

After my younger brother came forward to thank a priest for presiding at his newborn son’s burial, he proceeded to fall into the priest's arms with a wail from the depths of his fatherly heart. Such visceral grief for an infant who passed just before (or after) being born still touches my heart to this day, even after many years.

Different kinds of priests

A diocesan priest belongs to a diocese, normally a geographic area of the Church. The ordinary for a diocesan priest is his bishop. A diocesan priest’s main ministry is parish work. He makes two promises: obedience to his bishop and celibacy, perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He does not promise poverty, is paid, retains his own finances, is able to have personal possessions such as a car or a home, and is sometimes called a secular priest.
