A 5:30 p.m. Mass Jan. 4 for the repose of the soul of the late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has been postponed at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul because of heavy snow and icy roads.

The Mass, where Archbishop Bernard Hebda was to preside, will be held on another still-to-be-determined date.

Pope Benedict died Dec. 31 at age 95 in his residence at the Vatican. His funeral Mass is scheduled for Jan. 5 in St. Peter’s Square, with Pope Francis the principal celebrant.

The Twin Cities and much of southern Minnesota was blanketed with more than a foot of snow Jan. 3 and Jan. 4, with hundreds of spin outs and crashes on roads and highways statewide.

Other commemorations of Pope Benedict XIV in the archdiocese have included 3 p.m. vespers Jan. 1 at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. The Basilica also plans a requiem Mass at noon Jan. 5, in the St. Joseph Chapel, officials said.
