As the couple who developed a Bemidji-area retreat center prepare to retire, they’re hoping someone will buy their St. Francis Lodge and continue to offer it to priests and religious brothers and sisters for prayer and relaxation.

“It will take somebody who believes in the ministry and who has energy,” said Sal Di Leo, 66, who with his wife Beth, 69, first invited four religious sisters to enjoy the property in 2003, and from there developed the center.

Located on Lake George near Itasca State Park, the center’s main lodge has six bedrooms and baths. The 1.5-acre property also features a chapel, small bunkhouse, grotto and Stations of the Cross. Altogether, it sleeps eight for group and individual retreats.

The couple, formerly of St. Charles Borromeo in St. Anthony, hope a parish, diocese, organization or individuals will purchase the retreat center to maintain not only the mission but also the property — something that’s increasingly challenging for them as they age.

They hope St. Francis Lodge can continue its legacy of “the renewal of faith in religious, the clergy and people discerning their vocation,” Sal Di Leo said. “You feel God’s presence in this place.”
