The 74th annual May Day Family Rosary Procession in St. Paul stood out from its predecessors May 2: It honored Mary in the Church’s special Year of St. Joseph.

The procession from the State Capitol to the Cathedral of St. Paul included music and the Rosary, followed by a Marian devotion at the Cathedral with Scripture readings, eucharistic adoration and a homily from Archbishop Bernard Hebda.

“How wonderful it is to soak in our Catholic traditions,” the archbishop said. Those traditions are beautiful and rationally consistent: All lead to Jesus, he said.

With the phrase, “Go to Joseph,” taken from Scripture, people can be assured they will be drawn to his wife, the Virgin Mary, who will bring them to Jesus, the messiah, the archbishop said.

The archbishop noted with gratitude children gathered with their families at the procession, which drew about 550 people. Passing on faith traditions helps ensure that the rosary procession, initiated in 1947, will continue for many years to come, he said.
