Students at St. John Vianney School in South St. Paul have already made many contributions to “A Billion Acts of Green,” the theme for this year’s Earth Day, which coincides with Good Friday on April 22.

On March 24, during the CAPS, CANS and Worms, OH MY! Waste Reduction Fair, pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students from St. John Vianney School showed off the Caring for God’s Creation projects they have worked on throughout this 2010/2011 school year. Students set up 18 different stations around the school’s Connolly gymnasium with a specific goal to teach family, friends and neighbors in their community the importance of recycling and reusing.

With help from a Community Power grant from the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board, students began in September to learn about waste management and recycling. The lessons included: packing waste free lunches, reducing packaging, composting with worms and recycling and reusing.

Each classroom had a worm bin and fed the worms lunch scraps. The objective of the grant and waste reduction fair is to help the students take action and become good stewards of the earth.
