For a long time, WCCO meteorologist Katie Steiner said she lived life without her identity rooted in Christ. Striving to live a holy life is difficult in today’s culture, she said, because it is easy to go astray.

In an episode of the “Practicing Catholic” radio show set to air at 9 p.m. May 30 on Relevant Radio 1330 AM, Steiner told the show’s producer, Rachael McCallum, “I don’t know if the majority of people that we live with, their number one goal is heaven. It’s easy to lose sight of that. It’s just a daily focus of, ‘Where are my priorities? Where do I get my satisfaction?’ … You need to figure out where you want to be and who you want to serve.”

This realization, Steiner said, doesn’t usually happen in a single moment. In her experience, it’s taken her six months to a year to reset her priorities and figure out the answer to these questions.

“Once I got back into TV, it was very much like, ‘OK, do I want to do this again? Is this where God is calling me? Can he still use me in this way or is this something that I’m feeding my ego (with) or feeding something that is not from God?’”

Steiner explained that life and getting to heaven are not competitions.

“(In) our world today, we are so competitive,” Steiner said. “For me, (I) look at another woman and immediately it’s like, ‘Is she prettier than me? Is she thinner than me?’ You just go down the list and then you take a step back. You’re like, ‘What are you doing?’ Like, that doesn’t matter. I feel like it’s just our humanity and the culture that we live in.”

Steiner said people can feel pitted against one another, but this, she believes, is not how God works.

“He wants every single one of us to live with him in heaven, and that is something that was hard for me to figure out,” Steiner said. “The whole way that you look at things is different because you’re like, ‘My goal is not only to get to heaven but also to bring as many people with me that I possibly can. And I can’t do that if I’m tearing people down.”

Also on the program, Father Jim Livingston, pastor of St. Paul in Ham Lake, shares what it means to become like a child as Jesus instructed. And Archbishop Bernard Hebda discusses how individual gifts of the Holy Spirit contribute to God’s plan.

Produced by Relevant Radio and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, “Practicing Catholic” can be heard after it has aired at archspm.org/faith-and-discipleship/practicing-catholic or choose a streaming platform at Spotify for Podcasters.
