Jesus

Shepherd or judge? A tale of two sacraments

When I made my first confession, I clutched an index card with sweaty palms. On one side, I'd copied the act of contrition, dutifully memorized -- but what if I tripped up in the heat of the moment? On the reverse was a detailed list of my sins, anxiously scribbled lest I miss one.

Good gifts of the Spirit

One of the true blessings in my life was spending my high school years at our former archdiocesan minor seminary, Nazareth Hall. Not only did I, as a working-class kid, get a classical college-prep education from dedicated priests and laymen and laywomen, but I was welcomed into a group of young men who over the years formed a genuine community.

Men need to pray and lead rosaries

Amid the normalcy of Jewish life in the hidden years of our Lord with the Holy Family, the prayer and worship life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph no doubt was as divine as it gets.

In silence, Jesus; in service, peace

In early August, I flew to San Diego to attend my nephew’s graduation from the U.S. Marine Corps. It was really special seeing him after 12 weeks of basic training, especially since I was not able to be present when he left home in April. His commencement reminded me of all those who honorably serve our nation to help maintain peace and order for the sake of the common good.

Joseph, virginal father of Jesus

When asked to speak on the virginity of St. Joseph, I tried to convince Deacon Dan Gannon to switch talks. Deacon Gannon’s talk “Wonder 9: Patron of a Happy Death” (Nov. 2) will be at the Carondelet Center, which the Sisters of St. Joseph own, and I worked as a nursing supervisor at the retirement home of the sisters for years. I have been with many sisters as they experienced a happy death. But, alas, Deacon Gannon did not want to give up a happy death for virginity.

Obedience to God’s will

As Catholics, we have a beautiful intercessor, the Virgin Mary, to whom we pray for protection and guidance. During the month of May, one of the two months in which Mary is particularly honored, we ask that her gentle, loving voice help us know the way we are to go in life.
