In anticipation of the May 2027 release of Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” its 2004 predecessor, “The Passion of the Christ,” will return to theaters Sept. 10-17. The film is being distributed jointly by Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment.
Screenings of the movie — remastered in 4K and with a Dolby Atmos audio mix — will include a “sneak peek” at the forthcoming picture, including behind-the-scenes footage of the production. The re-release will begin with domestic distribution, followed by an international return. Tickets will become available online and at participating theaters starting July 24.
Following its original release, “The Passion of the Christ” — which focuses primarily on the 12 hours leading up to Jesus’ death on the Cross — was nominated for three Academy Awards. But the film also stirred controversy, especially with regard to what some viewed as its anti-Semitic content.
The Office for Film and Broadcasting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops gave the picture an A-III classification, deeming it appropriate for adults only. This was due primarily to the scenes of harrowing violence it contains.
In a highly unusual artistic choice on Gibson’s part, the movie’s dialogue was entirely in the relevant original languages, Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin. The international cast was headed by Jim Caviezel in the role of the Savior.
Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will play Jesus in both parts of “The Resurrection of the Christ.” The final movie in the trilogy is slated for release in 2028. For more information, go to: fathomentertainment.com
